“I wish I was a Kellogg’s cornflake floatin’ in my bowl takin’ movies.” Simon and Garfunkel’s hit song, “Punky’s Dilemma” released in 1966 pretty much sums it all up, doesn’t it?
What do we wish for? Why do we wish for it? Any type of whimsical escapism is a good thing unless we become the modern-day Walter Middy who seemed to lose touch with all reality. If you let yourself “escape” into your wishes, you will be happy as you anticipate your vacation or even the end of the latest snow storm. I loved not only the catchy tune of this Simon and Garfunkel song but also the lyrics that transcended me to another place, albeit farfetched and absurd.
I can’t help thinking about the slaves who used their spirituals to not only communicate but also to escape to another heavenly world. I once read an adage by Thomas Fuller, British scholar in the 1600’s. It has struck me as inspirational and true:
If you don’t have hope, the heart would break.
As we continue our journey spearheaded by our book Black and White Like You and Me, Cookie and I are motivated by our wish and our hope that by gathering people in conversation the world will become a better place.
